How We Manufacture Activated Carbon
Activated carbon is produced from coconut shells, wood, coal and other carbonaceous sources. During activation, pure carbon is extracted from these materials through a superheating process known as pyrolysis.
The characteristics of the final product depend on several manufacturing variables, including:
- Type of raw material
- Activation duration and reaction rate
- Reaction temperature
- Type and concentration of oxidizing gases
Careful control of these variables throughout production is essential to achieving consistent activated carbon quality.
Manufacturing Plant | West Virginia, USA
Carbon Activated operates a coal based activated carbon manufacturing plant in Mount Hope, West Virginia. Strategically located in the heart of coal country, the facility strengthens our U.S. production capabilities and supports a reliable domestic supply of high quality activated carbon.
The plant uses advanced processing technology designed to provide consistent performance across a wide range of applications. It is an important part of Carbon Activated's U.S. manufacturing capability and supports customers searching for activated carbon manufacturers in the USA and domestic activated carbon supply.

Rotary Kiln | Sri Lanka
Carbon Activated's Sri Lanka operation uses a rotary kiln measuring 20 meters long and 2.4 meters in diameter. The kiln is a large, slow rotating cylindrical tube lined with fireclay bricks.
Raw material is continuously fed from a hopper into the kiln, which steadily rotates the carbonized material. A blower forces air into the kiln while the charcoal reacts with hot steam, raising the internal temperature to approximately 900-1100ºC.
As the material moves slowly downward, steam activation creates pores within its internal surface area, increasing the available adsorptive spaces. Depending on temperature and oxygen levels, the activation process takes approximately 25-40 minutes.
After activation, the carbon passes through a screw conveyor with a cooling jacket, reducing its temperature to approximately 200ºC. It then enters a cooling kiln, where it is chilled to approximately 30-40ºC for several minutes before being sized, sorted and packed into bulk bags for storage.
Sri Lanka Production Process
The rotary kiln operation includes the following controlled stages:
- Raw material feeding
- Rotary kiln activation
- Steam treatment
- Temperature control
- Cooling
- Sizing
- Sorting
- Bulk packing
- Storage
This continuous process moves activated carbon from activation through cooling and final preparation.
Multiple Hearth Kiln | China
Some of the activated carbon sourced from manufacturers in China is produced using multiple hearth furnaces, which manufacture high grade activated carbon efficiently with very little carbon loss.
In this process:
- The furnace consists of a cylindrical carbon steel shell supported on steel legs, approximately 15 meters tall and 6 meters in diameter.
- Charcoal is carried to the top of the furnace by a bucket elevator.
- Multiple rotating internal hearths move the material downward during activation.
- Each hearth is equipped with gas burners and steam injectors.
- Burner operation and hearth temperatures are automatically controlled to maintain approximately 900-1100ºC.
- At the furnace exit, the activated carbon is cooled through heat exchangers.
- The carbon is then conveyed to screening equipment before being transferred from silos for bagging, storage and packaging.
Carbon Activated works closely with manufacturers in China as part of its wider supply network. These operations are sourcing and manufacturing relationships rather than Carbon Activated owned manufacturing facilities.
Quality Assurance and Manufacturing Control
Quality control is integrated throughout the manufacturing process rather than limited to finished material. Samples are collected at various stages of production and tested for quality in our laboratories.
Key manufacturing and quality control variables include:
- Raw material selection
- Activation time
- Reaction rate
- Reaction temperature
- Oxidizing gas type and concentration
- Cooling
- Sizing
- Sorting
- Final preparation
Testing throughout production helps Carbon Activated maintain its quality standards from start to finish.
For additional testing requirements, see our laboratory testing services.
Activated Carbon Manufacturing From Different Raw Materials
Carbon Activated's manufacturing processes use a range of carbonaceous raw materials.
Coconut Shell
Coconut shells are used as a raw material in activated carbon manufacturing.
Coal
Coal is used to manufacture activated carbon, including at Carbon Activated's coal based manufacturing plant in Mount Hope, West Virginia.
Wood
Wood is another carbonaceous source used in activated carbon production.
Raw material selection is one of the key factors influencing the characteristics and qualities of the finished activated carbon.
Activated Carbon Sizing and Packing
Activated carbon manufacturing continues beyond the activation stage. At the Sri Lanka rotary kiln facility, the carbon is cooled before being fed into sizing equipment, sorted and packed into bulk bags for storage.
For certain products represented in the supplied product information, packaging options include:
